Special Surface Coating Eliminates Over-Impression Errors
This unique patented coating is applied directly onto your existing or newly-manufactured cylinder, providing a vibration-absorbing platform for the plate that allows for over-impression and virtually eliminates banding. Vibration is created by a combination of shafts turning, gears meshing, plates contacting anilox rolls, variation in cylinder TIR and the shuddering created by the die-cut station along the frame of the press. This coating acts as a shock absorber and allows the press operator to over-impress the plate to the substrate without the usual negative consequences.

Key Advantages:
- Mount plates directly to the cylinder with 0.005” tape
- Greatly reduces, or in most cases removes, banding or gear marking
- Allows operator to increase press speed and decrease make ready time
- Eliminates flexo “doughnut” dots, which significantly increases tonal range
- Reduces dot gain, slur, and holds tiny reverses open and clean
- Improves consistency across press runs due to the lack of cushion breakdown
- Extends the life of digital plates

Frank Burgos says:
When I first heard the claims made by the folks at Nu Tech regarding Performance Enhancing Cylinders, I was extremely skeptical. In fact, Jim Wyman, of Nu Tech, reminds me that I didn’t even give him the “time of day” the first time he approached me with the concept.
For some reason, despite my skepticism, the second time he approached me, I agreed to evaluate the cylinders. However, I told him that we would have to do some serious testing before I put my company’s reputation on the line.
We were able to arrange for a test trial at North Carolina A&T State University, with the help of Dr. Dean Gilbert, and several industry folks, including the folks at Flint Group, who were very generous in helping design a plate that we thought was sure to fail and providing plenty of them for testing, and Water Ink Technologies, who provided the ink. I believe Avery Dennison provided the substrate, and I apologize to anyone I may have left out. (See the December 07 FLEXO Magazine article “Banding Be Gone”? (www.flexomag.com )
Several operators, lab technicians, and other industry folk have either set impression themselves, or were present when others did. I personally set impression multiple times, and the last time I visited the university, they had made over 120 sets of samples. A set is printing with a conventional cylinder-tape-plate configuration at 150 fpm, then at 250 fpm, then immediately printing a with PEC cylinder-tape-plate combination, also at 150 fpm and 250 fpm.
I am here to tell you that I was absolutely amazed, as were all of my colleagues. Side-by-side comparisons leave no doubt; these things work!
Since then, we have agreed to work with Nu tech, and I’ve been telling anyone who will listen about these cylinders. They absolutely reduce or eliminate banding in vignettes, process, and other half-tone images. I am very excited about offering these cylinders to the market as another tool we can use to help in the battle to get closer to the quality achieved by our competing technologies, litho and gravure. I have a feeling they’re gonna get nervous!
