Postby menhox » Wed Jun 10, 2015 9:14 am

Hi everyone, I hope you're good and doing well,

We are working on prepress department for about 2 years and we still don't have server for saving files, we use Pc-s and we're looking to have acces only our studio which is 3 or 4 computers.

Which one do you prefer?

Thanks

Ideally for redundancy you would want to work on a server. A server with a RAID 1 is ideal. You can use RAID 0 for maximum capacity over all drives but with RAID 1 you are sharing the data on all drives so if 1 drive crashes you just replace it and you still have all your data. It is always good to do a weekly backup on Friday and someone take that drive home so you have offsite backup incase a fire rips through your building.

Working from a server has more benefits than just redundancy. You don't have to worry about having multiple versions of files across your network on Bob or Mary's machine. You should have folders for your customers and within those folders you have a detailed description of the jobs. Within those you should have an Original folder for customer supplied files, Proof folder for PDF's and Working and Output folders that have the final approved file and stepped file. Depending on your workflow, many people don't like having a distorted file as well as a final approved file for the fear of using the wrong file.

Hope that helps you a little, every prepress department i've worked in has been different. But they all try to practice the same methods.
