Color registration on a stack press

Postby sharbel abdo » Fri Mar 01, 2013 8:05 am

Hello,
does anyone know what are the approximate register tolerances of a geared stack flexo press?
any guidelines on this issue?

Hi,

Are you using center marks or microdots? We do have a customer who prints with microdots on a stack press and doesn't use a camera mounting system but they seem to be within the of .5pt-1pt range using .015" microdots. We build about 2pt trap into the artwork on all their line work so it misregisters a lot then that 2pt will help it out. We try to build the artwork around the customers abilities so that way if things don't work out then its not a total loss.

I have seen stack presses that would print process jobs perfectly and others that required as much as 1/16 of trap to be correct. Mechanical soundness of keyways on the print cylinders as well as the register control hardware is critical. However, even with all that, I have found that tension control in and out of the stack is very important. Balancing the infeed and outfeed tensions will keep registration drift to a minimum.
