Pittsburgh, PA, February 5, 2008--The Ben Franklin Society, honor society to the Printing Industries of America/Graphic Arts Technical Foundation (PIA/GATF), is proud to announce that Eugene Langlais II, an independent consultant and retired chief technology officer of Presstek, Inc., is the recipient of the 2007 Robert F. Reed Technology Medal.
Mr. Langlais, who began his career as chief chemist for a government research company, has dedicated over 40 years to the development of products and processes that advanced the science of printing. Not only does he possess substantial technical expertise, but he is also recognized as an experienced manager, businessman, and mentor.
In recent positions at Polaroid Graphics Imaging and at Presstek, Inc., Mr. Langlais led product development and manufacturing teams and introduced new products into the printing industry. His leadership and knowledge have led to breakthrough technologies that have simplified processing, improved operator safety, and promoted environmental sustainability.
Many of the projects Mr. Langlais spearheaded produced technologies that received the prestigious PIA/GATF InterTech™ Technology Award, including:
- · Presstek Applause No-Process Thermal Printing Plates (2004)
- · Presstek Dimension Computer-to-Plate System (2001)
- · Polaroid Graphics Imaging PolaProof Digital Halftone Proofing System (1998)
- · Polaroid Graphics Imaging Dry Tech Thermal Film (1997)
Mr. Langlais received many patents throughout his career, including patents for corrosion-resistant metallic plates, post-exposure treating solution for photosensitive graphic arts plates, image-forming composites for film, and lithographic imaging with non-ablative wet printing plates. Currently, he is the President of CAPRICORN Research, which provides independent research consulting to the graphic arts industry.
The Robert F. Reed Technology Medal will be presented to Mr. Langlais at a banquet during the 60th Annual Technical Conference of the Technical Association of the Graphic Arts (TAGA) on Tuesday, March 18, 2008, at the Sheraton Fisherman’s Wharf Hotel in San Francisco, CA. Mr. Langlais is also presenting at the conference; his “A Voyage to Lilliput--How Nano-technology Will Impact the Printing Industry” session takes place on Monday, March 17.
